Patchouli's backstory
The word “patchouli” means “green leaf” because it comes from an herbal bush that’s part of the mint family. In the fall, it blooms with delicate pink flowers. Patchouli is native to Southeast Asia, but the South Indian people (known as the Tamil) actually named the plant and developed some of its earliest uses. Centuries later, patchouli made its way to Europe by way of the trade routes, because cashmere and silks were often protected from moths by patchouli’s scented leaves!
In the 60s, the rich, earthy aroma with a slight mint undertone became associated with free spirits and people who were referred to as “hippies.” However, most of the patchouli oil used in the 60s was synthetic or considered low quality. Our PURE Patchouli is extracted from the highest-quality sources and has a rich, dark, earthy-sweet, and mellow aroma.
Today, patchouli is a popular note in many fragrances for its ability to add depth to scents. It’s also used in skin care products to promote the appearance of a smooth complexion.
